What should I do if I have an emergency roof leak?

If you have a roof leak, your safety comes first. Use your best judgment. If you’re not sure how serious the leak is, stay away from the area. Once you check the damage and it seems safe, follow these 7 steps to help prevent more damage:

  • Stay calm. If you’ve called us, we’re already on the way. Roof leaks are stressful, but we’re here to help.
  • Move valuable items. Take anything important out of the leak area. Cover items you can’t move with plastic.
  • Unplug electronics. Turn off and unplug computers, printers, and other devices. Don’t turn them back on until they’re completely dry.
  • Turn off the breaker. If there are outlets or wires near the leak, shut off power to that area.
  • Let the water drain. If water is coming through the ceiling, carefully poke a small hole with a screwdriver where it’s leaking most. This helps the water drain and avoids bigger damage.
  • Catch the water. Put buckets under the leak. Mop up any water or use a wet vac to reduce slipping and damage. We’ll bring drying tools if needed.
  • Block off the area. Use chairs, tape, or rope to keep people away. Place “wet floor” signs if you have them.
