what to expect from a roofing contractor
Why a Pre-Job Conference Is Essential for a Smooth Roofing Project
Before the first tool hits the roof, before the first crew member steps on site, there’s one critical step that sets the stage for success: the pre-job conference.
You might be wondering—is this just a meeting? A checklist? The answer is: it’s both, and so much more.
At Weather Shield Roofing Systems, our pre-job conferences are designed to eliminate surprises and ensure every stakeholder is on the same page—because no one wants to troubleshoot logistics on the fly when the cranes and crews are already in motion.
What Happens in a Pre-Job Conference?
We go through a comprehensive list of project details, sometimes using a formal checklist, sometimes walking through it with the customer and project team. The goal? Clarity.
Some key items we cover include:
- Who’s our main point of contact on-site?
- Where do we park?
- Where should dumpsters be staged when we load the roof?
- Are there days we need to avoid (e.g., large deliveries on Wednesdays)?
- Who are your facility trades (plumber, electrician) in case something arises?
Every project is different, so it’s critical to understand not just the scope, but the context. We want to know things like:
- Are there sensitive interior areas or equipment we need to avoid while fastening?
- Is there limited access at certain times of day?
- Are there existing relationships or expectations with other contractors that we should honor?
Who Attends the Pre-Job Conference Meeting?
Usually, project managers and operations staff attend. In some cases, account managers or sales reps—especially the ones who secured the job—join too. Their involvement ensures a full understanding of client expectations.
For example, if we’re working on a high-priority job with a client who owns multiple buildings, we want to nail it. So, we may ask a key team member like Brandon to attend, bringing energy and focus to the table right from the start.
Why It Matters
A successful pre-job meeting creates alignment. It prevents misunderstandings. And it allows us to deliver on our core promise: more roof life at less cost.
Because at the end of the day, roofing isn’t just about putting material on a building—it’s about protecting your operations, your investment, and your peace of mind. And that starts with a solid plan.
